Artist Statement
A versatile artist who creates textured artwork with cloth, enamel, and oils on canvas, wood and found objects. My physical work is both non-representational and figurative. The fabric creates curvilinear, organic lines and shapes that are made in glue-soaked fabric that is subsequently painted while the texture and unique application of medium is strongly influenced by abstract expressionism, especially its balance and color relationships. When familiar with my unique biography and the inspirations behind my artistic development, you find that I am passionate, have an attention to detail, and strong technique which creates a truly original body of work.
Though I was born in Gooding Idaho, I was raised in the San Francisco Bay Area which offered a much more cultural upbringing. This gave me both the advantage of the intimacy of small-town values and the diversity of a metropolitan experience.
Starting to make artwork in my later years as a therapeutic self-exploration and recovery from trauma, my experimentation with non-objective subjects that involved the combinations of color, line, form, and texture led to an emotional expression that translates directly to common human experiences. This creates a connection from the art with the viewer both conscious and unconscious in contemplative and meaningful ways. With decades of working with young children, I retained a pure, childish enthusiasm prompting a self-directed study of materials that led to the creation and development of this nontraditional and distinctive cloth process. The years of exploration gave me the confidence to further my education in midlife focusing on Liberal arts, Art history, and Fine art.
The imaginative and original techniques and experiences that I bring to my work, give me the distinction of artistic individuality.
